Dog lovers have always known that dogs are intelligent and loving animals that are deeply devoted to "human beings." The author W. Bruce Cameron took this knowledge and added a unique
touch that rests on it - a novel that imagines a dog, that lives dogs
many lives, and remembers all life, and the lessons learned in this
life.
Purpose of a dog opens with a puppy describing his life. It soon becomes clear that the puppy, with its three brothers and their mother are ferocious. Eventually, the puppy, along with his mother and brother are captured by a rescue dog. They are placed in a backyard with many other dogs and while the puppy, who soon called Toby, is doing well, his mother can not handle the human interaction and manages to escape. Toby develops, binds friendship and finally reunites with his sister. But the problem comes when the rescue is closed by the authorities to have too many dogs. Toby soon finds himself in a bad situation ...
When Toby's life comes to an end, he is reincarnated as a beautiful Golden Retriever. Now the puppy is part of a healthy litter, tended with a breeder. When he sees other smaller litters, being adopted and disappearing into the great beyond the outside of the yard, you want to go. He remembers seeing his mother's first life open the door handle, and he works to copy. He works and escapes from the breeder and slows down until he is picked up by a friendly man who takes him for a ride in his car. Unfortunately, the man stops at a bar and leave the puppy in his warm car. Again, the puppy is saved, this time for a woman break the car window just in time before the heat stroke kills the dog. He takes the puppy to his young son's house, and that's where most of the story is - between "Bailey" the dog and "Boy".
After "Boy", Bailey returned a few times - once as K-9 search and rescue of German shepherd and again as a black lab. His final incarnation as a laboratory brings you to complete the loop with a very satisfactory conclusion to the story.
Told from the dog's point of view, the purpose of a dog is a charming story that immediately attracted me and prevented me from reading until the last page was shot. The author has a real gift to capture a dog's thoughts and really felt like the dog was sharing his life with me. Toby / Bailey / Ellie / Buddy is an affectionate dog who knew his goal was to do what the man wanted or had to do, whether it saved a child from drowning, or go for a reader to make child happy. Like any dog, this dog chooses the words: "kennel", "bed", "dream", etc. And basic concepts such as "Merry Christmas" meant for him who came to the house. At the foot of its owner sit down and take a word of human talk - for example, his name - and be delighted, not knowing what it was the rest of the conversation. The author included a minimum of human dialogue to give readers an idea of what was going on, but even without this help, it was not difficult to follow. Much of what the dog has been picking people's emotions around them - feeling of joy, fear, pain - and reacting accordingly. The writing style has worked really well, and I hope to get into the next, travel of a dog.
