Back to Basics: Homemade Food for Your Dog

Fads come and go, but I love the trend we see with back to basics for cooking and eating. More and more people worldwide are leaving conservatives for 3 main reasons: health, taste and money.
The recent change and still recovering, saw economic has forced many to learn to stretch the food, and the first rule of eating cheap is what you do at home. Leaving as we continued the trend, either the health benefits and taste, and now see the cross on pet food. Brands focus on organic, but the owners take a step further and make the food from home. This is a great option, but make sure your pet gets the nutrition they need in a safe way.
The dogs were originally scavengers and hunters, and could withstand a lot. However, today the dog can not always manage as much as their ancestors, and no owner wants to throw your rotten dog meat anyway. There is much research on the best diet for a dog based off the original breeds of wolves. We know that most were carnivores, such as bears but who also filled in your diet with a variety of plant foods. Modern dogs are not very different in their nutritional needs and a balanced meal is key.
So what do you need a dog? There are conflicting reports on the numbers and percentages, as is generally regarding any nutritional information, but the basics are the same: proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals.
Protein can be found in vegetables and meat, but dogs are more difficult to digest plant so the meat protein should be the main source. Dogs need about 18% - 22% protein in their diet, 22% if they are growing or reproducing. Working dogs need more, but excess protein in all dogs will cause hyperactivity. If you have a dog or a racing program, then it will go that extra that the protein.
Fat is important for energy and brilliance coat. 5% is the minimum necessary and can come from a variety of sources. The simplest would be meat, but may contain vegetable fats in very good health. Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids are very important and can be found in fish, flaxseed, canola oil, pork fat and poultry fat, corn and soybean oils.
Vitamins and minerals are the last important ingredient to consider. For optimal health, most dogs need extra, even with the best dog food. vitamins are A, C, D, E and B-12. important minerals are calcium, phosphorus, iron and potassium. There are many sources of these nutrients that research and speak to your vet would be best.
So now we have our basic list of necessary food needs, we can envisage making food. The first and most important step is the safety. Dogs can defend against many bacteria and parasites, but are not immune. Make sure the food you plan to prepare has been stored properly and cleaned. Any meat that is not used immediately need to go in the freezer containers and freeze. Vegetables can go in the refrigerator and keep well for a while after cleaning.
There is a debate against the first cooked food. The dog eats mostly vegetables should be cooked. Meat can be raw, but it is important to discuss with your dog's veterinarian. Because dogs need fat, usually you want to keep the fat from the meat. Leaving food in the bone will change nutrients and is generally good. poultry bones should be removed after cooking, but they do a very nutrient broth, while the larger bones in steaks and pork can be chewed. Leftovers can be frozen and then thawed.
Another good choice is beef jerky. You can do it in a dehydrator and make great treats. However, the food is prepared, the best option is local and organic. This however is not always possible, and grocery stores work as long as the meat is fresh.
The last thing to consider is that you should not feed your dog. Dogs are allergic to many things and if you plan to make your own food, then you should have a master list of what not to feed your dog. In addition, certain breeds have dietary restrictions based on common diseases. If you have a dog whose breed is generally overweight, you may need to make adjustments to your recipe. As always, discuss the best option with your veterinarian to be sure!
