The African-American Story and the Evolution of Black History Month

month of black history has been recognized every February during the time that many of us remember, but very few are aware of how this could have happened. So we have to go all the way back to 1915 and a man named Carter G. Woodson. A graduate of the University of Chicago, with a doctorate from Harvard University, is known as the "Father of Black History."
During the summer of the same year, he joined in a celebration of emancipation in DC with thousands of others and turned away so inspired that he helped establish the Association for the Study of Life and Black history (ASNLH). A year later, he founded the Journal of Black History. His mission: to promote the achievements of its inhabitants.
Looking for an even greater impact in 1924, he and several friends created history and black literature Week, later renamed Black Week Awards. It was followed by a press release announcing the history of Black Week to be held in February.
This month was chosen in recognition of two influential men: Abraham Lincoln, who, as president led the nation through the years of the Civil War, Frederick Douglass, former slave and civil rights activist, who was also first black citizen to maintain a high level of the United States range of government.
The focus, however, was never in them, but in all men and black women who have contributed to society. These efforts have seen gradually improve the living conditions of blacks in the United States, and recognition of the history of blacks week spread across the country. However, it was not until the 1940s did Black History eventually make its way into textbooks, and thus to do. Finally, in 1976 - six years after the death of Woodson - the Association for the study of life and black history - 100 years, now they have changed their name to the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. ASALH then took care not just a week, but canceled the entire month of February.
And every year since then, the presidents of both Republicans and Democrats have announced annual theme of Black History Month. 2016 "sacred lands. African sites Memories" As ASALH reminds us: "You can not tell the story of America without preserve and reflect on where African Americans have made history."
Meanwhile, some of these remarkable places and people involved in the story that deserve special mention, from way back in 1619, when the first African slaves arrived in Virginia and 1808, when Congress finally banned them import. Then in 1861, the Confederation was founded, the Deep South was separated and the Civil War began.
Two years later, President Lincoln issued his Emancipation Proclamation "release all persons held as slaves." However, the war did not end until 1865; at that time, the 13th Amendment to the Constitution was ratified prohibiting slavery. Reconstruction followed, then the 14th Amendment was ratified zero Decision 1857 Dred Scott ruled that Congress could not prohibit slavery and slaves were not citizens. Three more years were to pass, however, before the 15th Amendment gave blacks the right to vote.
Also note:
• 1869: Howard University became the first school for black law.• 1877: the reconstruction is complete in the South.• 1879 Spelman College, the first college for black women, was founded.• 1879: Booker T. Washington founded the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute in Alabama.• 1896. The decision of the Supreme Court in Plessy against Ferguson said that racial segregation is constitutional.• 1905: W.E.B. DuBois founded the Niagara Movement, the forerunner of the NAACP.• 1909: The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was founded.• 1914: Marcus Garvey founded the Universal Association for Black Progress.• 1947: Jackie Robinson signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers, breaking the color barrier in major league baseball.• 1952: Malcolm X became minister of the Nation of Islam.• 1954: v. Board of Education Brown said that racial segregation is unconstitutional.
Despite this progress, the following year, Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her bus seat to a white passenger. Then, in 1957, nine black students were barred from entering Central High, and the National Guard had to be called. History also reminds us that in '63, Martin Luther King, Jr. was arrested and detained during the protests against segregation, but received the Nobel Peace Prize the following year. He was assassinated in 1968.
The same year, President Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act, Shirley Chisholm became the first black American woman representative, and 83, Guion Bluford, Jr. was the first African in space. These developments were then introduced into the 21st century:
• 2001: Colin Powell was appointed the first African-American US Secretary State.• 2005: Condoleezza Rice became the first black female secretary state.• 2008: Barack Obama was elected President of the United States.• 2009: Eric H. Holder named after the first African American to serve as attorney general of the United States ..• 2015: There are 46 black members of the US House of Representatives and two in the Senate.
If I could, Mr. Woodson today might say, "It is a matter of time."
